The region woke up to a blanket of snow after heavy falls during the night.
Travel disruption was expected this morning and drivers were warned only to go out if absolutely necessary.
Flights were cancelled across the country and Stansted Airport closed for a period in the night to clear snow from the runway.
A severe weather warning remans in place across the East of England.
Essex police warned drivers to avoid unnecessary journeys and said those who had to go out should take "extreme care".
Officers said no major problems have been reported so far.
A spokesperson said: "There are a few abandoned cars but the main routes are moving, albeit with only one track through the snow at the moment.
"Make sure your windscreen and windows are clear before you set off, have a shovel, warm clothing, flask with a hot drink and a fully charged mobile phone if you are embarking on a longer journey."
