Around 7,000 different products will be on the shelves of the South Street shop once trading begins - including lots of 99p branded essentials like Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Fairy Liquid, two-litre pints of milk, a dozen eggs, Nescafe coffee  - each for 99p – but also lots of perceived “posh” products like sundried tomatoes, anchovies and truffles.

Owner Hussein Lalani promised “jaw dropping” opening day offers. “Details will appear as posters on the shop front window in the next day or two,” he said.

“We’re delighted to be opening up in Bishop’s Stortford. We have around 7,000 different products form essentials to lifestyle, food to fashion and gifts to gizmos. And yes we do have many so-called posh products but certainly not at posh prices.”

He began his budget business just over 10 years ago in Holloway, north London. He said: “We have gone from one-man band to national brand in just over a decade.  This is all down to the best team in retail - and our great family of shoppers, more than one and a half million of them.

“In the early stages of our evolution and revolution, some shoppers heads were down as they came in and out of branches. Now its very much heads held high. Many clients rather than concealing they shop at 99p Stores - as some did in the very early days - now brag and boast to their friends and family.”

“Grabbing a bargain is now part of the shopping experience in Britain today. Britons have now become discerning skilful shoppers. This will be a lasting legacy of this recession.”

Around 35 new jobs are being created. Positions being offered range from customer assistants to stock replenishment officers. Applicants can apply now to jobs@99pstoresltd.com or via local offices of Jobcentre Plus.
