VIDEO: Cheers and tears as the Observer celebrates our community champions

By Web Reporter

THE wonderful work being carried out on our doorstep was celebrated at the third annual Observer and Mercury Community Awards last night (Monday, November 21).

There were smiles, tears and cheers aplenty as more than 100 guests came together at Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club in Ware to honour those who make our neighbourhoods a better place to live.

The glittering gala paid tribute to local people – ranging in age from 10 to 103 – who are brave, selfless, community-spirited and work tirelessly and without reward to make a difference to the lives of others.

Among the highlights of the evening was a standing ovation for centenarian Bertha Kilby, the winner of our Lifetime Achievement Award.

There was also rapturous applause for black Labrador CC, who received the special Judge’s Award for his work with Herts Fire and Rescue Service.

For full details of all our worthy winners see Thursday’s Observer.
