YOUNG Achievers Tania Lira-Martins and Sean Hendrie dedicated their award to their friend Jordan Trowsdale, the 13-year-old Bishop’s Stortford schoolboy who drowned in the Stort last Christmas.

The teenagers impressed the judges with their maturity and compassion in leading a campaign for safety improvements along the river and were rewarded with the latest iPhone by sponsor, the Brookfield Centre Tesco.

As their achievement was recognised, Tania who is 16 and a hairdressing student and 14-year-old Sean, who has just started his GCSE studies at Birchwood High School, hugged Jordan’s mum Fiona, who was their guest of honour.

The crusading pair said: "We will carry on trying to get railings installed in Sworders Field, so nobody else has to feel the kind of pain that Jordan’s family has endured.

"This was all for Jordan."

Fiona Trowsdale paid tribute to the Sawbridgeworth girl and Stortford lad and said they were a continuing comfort and inspiration: "I’m amazed at the strength they have found to do this.  I admire them so much – and Jordan would be so proud of them."

Brave Braughing 18-year-old Stephanie Knight, who is battling bone cancer, was highly-commended in the Young Achiever category.

Despite relying on a wheelchair, she raised more than £1,000 taking part in the 5k Race for Life to help other young sufferers.
