THIS week we ventured to a popular hostelry on the edge of the village of Sheering in Essex. The Crown is an attractive looking pub with ample parking at the front and located on the main road running through Sheering from Harlow. It’s one of those pubs where the car park always seems full - surely a good sign of what hides within.
You enter the large main bar area with a more formal restaurant to the right. The bar area is large, and noticeably spotless. The bar itself is long and there is plenty of seating and tables for lunchtime diners. One special feature of The Crown is the warm welcome from the landlord and landlady, and their staff. Always a good start to a visit!
The décor is traditional pub in style but we found the restaurant area, which is large, a bit too fussy in its décor and the signs which indicate a £1 surcharge for credit and debit card transactions plastered all over the walls a bit tacky.
The pub is well stocked for drinkers with a couple of special ales and the traditional array of lagers, ciders and regular beers. We sampled a reasonable quantity of the house wine which was very palatable and there is a range of wines to suit most regular palates.
The food was listed on a ‘specials board’ in the bar area and was varied in its offerings. Starters ranged around £5, mains at around £10 and dessert at £5. All are fairly priced for this type of establishment. We sampled the lasagne, the battered cod, the steak and kidney pudding and the calves liver and bacon. All were freshly cooked, came with a good selection of vegetables and were well received by the diners. The lasagne was noted as being a bit meagre in portion!
For dessert we sampled a range of the dishes on offer and all were good. For those wanting a wider choice there is a restaurant menu offering a further selection to suit most tastes.
The Crown is one of the more traditional pubs we’ve sampled on our quest and albeit we found aspects that weren’t particularly to our taste the pub is clearly popular and will satisfy most visitors. The ambience is warm, the owners are very welcoming and fun, and the food is unpretentious, wholesome, good value and well cooked. Those criteria should satisfy most visitors.
The overall offering of this establishment is good and we award The Crown in Sheering «««
