Roadshow maps out airport routes

By Sinead Holland
A TRAVELLING roadshow will map out new routes into a two-runway Stansted Airport for residents next week.

A Highways Agency exhibition will visit The Charis Centre in Water Lane, Bishop's Stortford, on Friday, March 28 from 2pm until 8pm and the next day (Saturday) from 10am until 4pm.

The Government's preferred option to cope with 68m passengers per annum by 2030, described as "spaghetti junction" by SSE critics, has been heralded as the safest solution by the Department for Transport.

It proposes a new junction on the M11 and a replacement junction on the A120, specifically: a new two bridge roundabout junction on the M11 (Junction 8b) linked to Junction 8 and with connections to the M11 in both directions and a replacement two bridge roundabout junction on the A120 with connections to the A120 in both directions plus demolition of the two existing A120 junctions, including the bridges.

There would also be a lengthened section of the dual three lane section of A120 between the existing junction and the replacement junction. Footpaths and bridleways would be diverted and new bridges across the motorway would be constructed for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

At the same time as the roadshow rolls into town, copies of maps and documents detailing the proposals to construct a new, fourth train platform at the airport and add a second rail tunnel into the terminal station will be available at libraries and council offices across the [Observer] area.

As part of its application for an order under the Transport and Works Act, the airport is also asking to compulsorily purchase land for the rail enhancement project it needs to service a second runway.
