Keep focus and set targets

What are your fitness options?

Ian Mellis talks setting goals

As we hit spring that new year motivation to get fit might be slipping, so what are the best options for keeping motivated and on track to hit your goals?

Firstly, it depends what type of person you are; do you like training in a group or are you fine training on your own? Positive social support is highlighted as one of the most motivating factors for goal achievement. When it comes to exercise adherence, if you are struggling, try to find a gym that has a good motivating atmosphere or try group classes.

Secondly, consider personal training. Re-evaluating your goals can help you focus; speaking to a professional will help align your intentions with action, re-motivating you to take the next step towards your target.

At Results FAST it is around this time of year that I remind many of our members that if you are not following your programme and not being consistent with your nutrition plan then your results will be hampered. This does not mean that there is no fun – it just means that if unhealthy eating outweighs sensible nutrition then results will be limited. Different things work for different people, I tend to programme a person’s nutrition and exercise programme to meet their specific needs and personality – why? Because we are all different and our lifestyles vary greatly, also our time available to exercise is different. Some people need to work harder in the gym, others need to learn to back away and recover better and more often than not nutrition is the major factor.

Ultimately, accountability is the key – who is responsible for your goals? If you are then you will need to measure your goals and have a target. As I manage a lot of my clients’ goals it is easy a lot of the time to blame other commitments for getting in the way. Concentrating on the process of steady and progressive achievement is often a lot healthier than focusing on the overall goal. If you eat badly or miss a training session it is not the end of the world but if you do it consistently, it will affect your results. Find whatever it takes to keep you motivated and then stick with it, remember you only ever get out what you put in.
