HERTS new Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Rachel Frosh resigned this morning (February 13) after she became embroiled in a Twitter row about Hitler.
Commissioner David Lloyd said: “I am sad to have to accept Rachel’s resignation. She has taken the honourable course of action by making this decision and I will miss her valuable contribution to my work to further improve policing and crime reductions for the public of Hertfordshire.”
Dr Frosh (pictured) said: “I appreciate that David must have constructive relationships with all political parties. I recognise that I am not able to fully comment on some political issues whilst remaining as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner. It is therefore with great regret that I have tendered my resignation this morning.”
Earlier the Conservative, who earned £20,000 a year for her two day a week job, removed a Twitter post she shared that likened Socialists to Nazis.
She had retweeted the post, which was originally made by another user, on Saturday (February 2).
The tweet, which was posted by a user under the name Fenrir, read: “Dear Socialists embrace your inner Nazism.”
A subsequent link took web users to a picture of Adolf Hitler captioned with a quote from him describing the Nazis as Socialists.
One fellow Twitter user who read the tweet on Ms Frosh’s feed was Sharon Taylor a Labour Herts county councillor and leader of Stevenage Council and she tweeted: “I am shocked at this. Do you think it’s funny/acceptable? It’s not.”
The deputy commissioner, who was appointed in December, said she did not recall the retweet on the micro-blogging site and denied there was a comparison to be made between Nazis and Socialists.
The Harpenden town councillor said: “If I have retweeted that, it’s not an endorsement of the point, but there is a point that we should have a debate about where on the spectrum they are.
“I think there is a general dispute about whether Nazism is right wing or left wing.
“I don’t like left-wingers saying Nazis are on the extreme right.
She continued: “It’s very simplistic to say communists are on the left and nationalists are on the right.
“Nazis were authoritarian racists. My view is they shouldn’t be on the same spectrum as non-racist parties.
“I quite often retweet things that people ask me to retweet. I can completely disagree with something I have retweeted.”
The deputy commissioner then added a disclaimer to her Twitter account stating that: “Tweets are in a personal capacity and retweets are by no means an endorsement.”
She also tweeted: “Why do people think that you agree with something just because you retweet it? Crazy that you have to put up a disclaimer on retweets.”
