HERTS new Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Rachel Frosh resigned this morning (February 13) after she became embroiled in a Twitter row about Hitler.

Commissioner David Lloyd said: “I am sad to have to accept Rachel’s resignation. She has taken the honourable course of action by making this decision and I will miss her valuable contribution to my work to further improve policing and crime reductions for the public of Hertfordshire.”

Dr Frosh (pictured) said: “I appreciate that David must have constructive relationships with all political parties. I recognise that I am not able to fully comment on some political issues whilst remaining as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner. It is therefore with great regret that I have tendered my resignation this morning.”

Earlier the Conservative, who earned £20,000 a year for her two day a week job, removed a Twitter post she shared that likened Socialists to Nazis.

She had retweeted the post, which was originally made by another user, on Saturday (February 2).

The tweet, which was posted by a user under the name Fenrir, read: “Dear Socialists embrace your inner Nazism.”

A subsequent link took web users to a picture of Adolf Hitler captioned with a quote from him describing the Nazis as Socialists.

One fellow Twitter user who read the tweet on Ms Frosh’s feed was Sharon Taylor a Labour Herts county councillor and leader of Stevenage Council and she tweeted: “I am shocked at this. Do you think it’s funny/acceptable? It’s not.”

The deputy commissioner, who was appointed in December, said she did not recall the retweet on the micro-blogging site and denied there was a comparison to be made between Nazis and Socialists.

The Harpenden town councillor said: “If I have retweeted that, it’s not an endorsement of the point, but there is a point that we should have a debate about where on the spectrum they are.

“I think there is a general dispute about whether Nazism is right wing or left wing.

“I don’t like left-wingers saying Nazis are on the extreme right.

She continued: “It’s very simplistic to say communists are on the left and nationalists are on the right.

“Nazis were authoritarian racists. My view is they shouldn’t be on the same spectrum as non-racist parties.

“I quite often retweet things that people ask me to retweet. I can completely disagree with something I have retweeted.”

The deputy commissioner then added a disclaimer to her Twitter account stating that: “Tweets are in a personal capacity and retweets are by no means an endorsement.”

She also tweeted: “Why do people think that you agree with something just because you retweet it? Crazy that you have to put up a disclaimer on retweets.”

Are all of our councillors tarred with the same brush. In another society this would be regarded as some form of "incest"! How do you join this club, where are the application forms? With their mates and allies around them it is money for old rope. Unfortnately nothing will change come the next elections as the blue rinse brigade will just vote all the troughers straight back in and we will be stuck with all of them for god knows how long.

Cllr Lloyd now has a great opportunity to make an appointment that is not another Tory closed shop deal. He should do it professionally advertising and using a proper recruitment panel. He can still make the final decision.

This was discussed briefly on Jack FM at 06.50 today. "Oh I've met her 2 or 3 times, lovely" the "what was she thinking? 20k per year for a 2 day week basically doing nothing". Of course she did nothing wrong ha ha. As deputy police commissioner she forgot she retweeted offensive material. Do we want someone that lacking in judgement? Do we want someone who cannot remember? Do we want someone we didn't vote for? Do we want someone whose job was a political gimme which appears not advertised in the public domain?

When and where is the advert for a replacement deputy? You will be advertising this post and not giving it to a political ally Mr Lloyd?

If they are looking for a replacement I would like to nominate Cllr Mike Tindale - he seems to have experience of cooperating with the police

Absolutely disgraceful and deeply offensive. Immature behaviour from a Town Councillor and political friend of a senior HCC County Councillor David Lloyd who is now a part time Police Commissioner. These Conservatives at HCC are apeing the behaviour of the Conservative Councillors at East Herts. What have the people of Herts done to deserve all these people? What planet are they on? They are supposed to be setting an example. In part we pay them to behave.
