FRESH snow created a beautiful backdrop for a wassail at Sawbridgeworth's Rivers Orchard, which was attended by more than 60 people.
Guests were treated to cider and apple cakes made from the orchard's fruit, while youngsters had fun banging metal buckets in an ancient custom said to ward off bad spirits and ensure a good harvest.
The visitors also sang along with the musicians for Sawbridgeworth's wassail song, which was specially penned for the first such gathering in 1999.
Group secretary Hazel Mead said: "The snow gave the night a really magical atmosphere - I think it's the first time we've had it since we started. There aren't many wassails going on these days, so it's wonderful to be keeping an old tradition alive."
