THREE people were rushed to hospital today (Wednesday, February 15) after two accidents involving nine vehicles on the M11.
The first incident took place around 11am, blocking the carriageway both ways between junction 8 at the A120 at Bishop's Stortford and junction 9 of the M11 near Saffron Walden until about 1pm.
The collision involved a white Ford Transit van, a black Land Rover Freelander, a silver Vauxhall Astra, a black Ford Ka, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee and a blue Ford Mondeo.
Fifteen minutes later three cars - a red Renault Clio, a blue Ford Focus, and a black Ford Fiesta - caused a second pile-up in the opposite direction.
One victim was airlifted to Queen’s Hospital in Romford by the Hertfordshire Air Ambulance with head and chest injuries, while two motorists with minor injuries were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge.
Police said the road was cleared by the early afternoon, but heavy traffic and long queues were still being reported at 2.30pm.
