THE husband and godson of a Stortford woman battling a brain tumour have had a very close shave for charity.
Graham Willson and his godson Tom Padgett, who both live in Nursery Road, sacrificed their hair – and beard too in Graham’s case – and raised £4,200 for the The National Brain Appeal at the hands of Ollie Webber, of Ollie’s barber shop in South Street.
The hair-raising event took place at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club in Hadham Road, where Newport Free Grammar School Year 10 pupil Tom is a regular player for the U15s squad and Herts and Graham is an assistant coach to the U14’s B squad.
Tom, who lives with mum Karen and brother Jake, initiated the event as Julia, Graham’s wife of 22 years, is currently undergoing intensive radiotherapy as the latest treatment for her tumour, which was first diagnosed some 18 years ago.
The couple have two children - daughter Alexandra, who is a Year 13 pupil at the Herts and Essex High School and Oliver, in Year 9 at St Mary’s Catholic School.
Graham said: “Since Julia’s diagnosis with a brain tumour over 18 years ago, she has been so superbly looked after and treated at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queens Square, London, to whom we are all so indebted that she is still with us and able to be such a wonderful mother, godmother and wife.
“Earlier this month, 11 years to the day after surgery, which saw her undergo an awake craniotomy, she started six weeks of daily radiotherapy treatment and while we have always meant to try and raise awareness and money for the hospital, this new treatment and New Year 2013 has given a good reason to now follow this through.”
The associate project manager at City University, London, said: “Julia’s situation continues to change and means life’s targets and aims have become a little tougher, so having the aim of raising much-needed funds not only gives us another reason and much needed diversion to keep going and overcome, but also gives us an opportunity to help others.”
