Macmillan brews support for World's Biggest Coffee Morning

Written bySINEAD HOLLAND

MACMILLAN Cancer Support has launched an appeal for 250 people in the Bishops Stortford area to help it raise over £15m – by drinking coffee and eating cake.

The charity wants this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to be the best ever. It is hoping over 250 coffee mornings will take place across Bishops Stortford, attracting thousands of people and helping to raise over £805,000 across Herts and Essex.

Across the UK, Macmillan hopes to raise over £15m from the event to beat last year’s total.

This year, the announcement that a £3m Macmillan Cancer Centre will soon be built at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage means that the local importance of events such as coffee mornings is even greater.

The project will double Lister’s chemotherapy capacity, develop support services, and hugely improve patient experience.

The current award-winning chemotherapy unit is finding it difficult to meet the needs of people with cancer in East and North Herts now. Around 10,000 people are living with cancer in the region and 1,500 people are diagnosed with cancer every year.

Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Herts, Laura Bazzoni, said: “We want to make sure no one has to face cancer alone but we can’t do it without the amazing people who fundraise for us.

“Last year we raised a record-breaking amount of money from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and we really hope we can repeat that again this year.

“We’re asking people to once again invite their friends, relatives, or workmates to come for coffee and help support Macmillan.

“It’s a fun and easy way to raise money to help Macmillan be there for people with cancer and their families when they need us most.”

The money raised from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is used to fund services such as Macmillan nurses and local support centres.

Fundraiser Laura added: “Sadly the number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing every year and that means Macmillan’s support for people living with cancer is in more demand than ever.

“Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning will help us fund our vital services.”

The official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is on September 27, but events can be held at any time.
