Pearsons confirm closure of Bishop's Stortford store

Written byBy Web Reporter

BISHOP’S Stortford’s iconic department store Pearsons has announced it is to shut its doors in the town for good.

PearsonsLetters were sent out to customers this week informing them of the news and giving details of a £3million closing down sale.

Morley Stores Ltd, which snapped up the North Street store just over 18 months ago, said the move was being made in order to concentrate on its sister branch in Enfield.

Staff at the historic store were warned back in July that their jobs were in jeopardy.

However, David James, managing director of Morley Stores Ltd, said at the time it was not a forgone conclusion that the store would close.

Pearsons will be closed from this Saturday until Tuesday in order for staff to prepare the closing down sale.

It will reopen to invited guests on Wednesday and Thursday and will open to the general public next Friday (September 7).

A final closing date was not stated in the letter.

Pearsons was founded in 1903 by Arthur and Stanley Pearson.
