Stortford dad's 1,000-1 bet on daughter to overtake Justin Bieber and become first to get 100 million followers on Twitter

A STORTFORD man has placed a bet with bookmakers that his 15-year-old daughter – upcoming singer Shakila – will be the first person to reach 100 million followers on social networking site Twitter.

Karim Ullah placed the £10 bet with William Hill at odds of 1000-1.

If he wins, Mr Ullah has pledged to donate his £10,000 winnings to the children's charity Barnardo's.

Shakila, who has ambitions to be a successful performing artist, has been using Twitter for just over a year and has only recently started tweeting regularly. She has also won two competition prizes on Twitter in the last two months.

Karim feels Shakila has some momentum now and is confident that she will be the first to achieve this milestone.

“I know no-one has 50 million followers on Twitter yet, which, of course, makes reaching 100 million followers an incredibly ambitious target," he said.

“However, I’m confident that Shakila’s going to be doing a lot of interesting things as a singer and musician, which will create a real buzz.

“I also expect her to do some humanitarian work in the near future – all of which will, hopefully, help others and help make her the first person to reach 100 million followers on Twitter.”

His daughter was just as optimistic: "I’d love to have many more followers on Twitter as I want more people to listen to my music.

“I’ve noticed so many more people are following me on Twitter after I started tweeting a lot more – and I hope that trend will continue.

“I really enjoy tweeting about so many different things, especially quotes to inspire my followers. It would be absolutely fantastic if I can connect with more people on Twitter.”

Teenage pop phenomenon Justin Bieber is currently leading the way when it comes to Twitter followers with 44,067,155. Katy Perry is second with 42,089,987 and wacky songstress Lady Gaga is third with 40,028,893.

A spokesperson for William Hill said: "Shakila will have to have a meteoric rise in order to trouble the likes of Bieber and Gaga, but she appears to be on the cusp of something big.”
