Injury blow delays Stortford striker's Gillingham trial

By Alan Scott
A HAMSTRING injury to Blues striker Charlie Sheringham has delayed a trial at League One club Gillingham.

The 21-year-old son of former England and Spurs forward Teddy Sheringham will spend a week at Gills, managed by ex-Stevenage Borough boss Mark Stimson.

INJURY BLOW: Charlie SheringhamSheringham is out of Bishop’s Stortford’s league match tonight (Monday) at Havant & Waterlooville.

He could be out for at least a fortnight.

Stortford boss Mark Simpson has agreed to let Sheringham stay at the Kent outfit for a week, but this will be when both sides are not in action in midweek.

He said: "Charlie injured his hamstring on Saturday. They will want to see Charlie train with a first team and not the reserves."

"The trial has to suit both parties. It has to be in a week where we do not have a midweek game and Gillingham do not have one."

Sheringham is the top scorer in Blue Square South with 16 goals.

Blues paid Blue Square South rivals Welling United £6,500 at an FA tribunal last month for the forward who joined Stortford in May.

"I've seen Charlie play a lot and he is a good player at that level," Stimson told Kent Online.

"There was a possibility he was going to come here and do some training, but with the games being postponed and the facilities not being available, it didn't materialise.

"Whether that will happen in the next couple of months, who knows?

"Whether he will suit this division yet I'm not sure, but we are interested in him."

Sheringham was released by Coca-Cola Championship side Crystal Palace two years ago.

Stortford will want to command a five-figure fee for Sheringham to recoup what they paid Welling.
