BISHOP’S Stortford Swifts came roaring back to football action after a month out with a 5-1 victory against Hannikins Farm in the Essex Olympian League, premier division.

During a scrappy opening 15 minutes, Swifts took the lead when after being put through Gavin Cockman pulled the ball back for Anthony James who turned well in the box to fire home.

Swifts doubled their advantage lead five minutes later when, after some good football down the left, between Xaniel Doku and James with the latter feeding Cockman to stroke past the keeper.

On 35 minutes it was 3-0 when Cockman raced on to a through ball from James and fired a low shot from the edge of the box into a corner of the net.

In the second half, a 25-yard strike brought a goal back for Hannikins before a great clearance from Michael Moore off the line keep Swifts’ two-goal lead intact.

They found a fourth goal when James made a great run down the left and pulled the ball back for Cockman to complete his hat-trick.

With five minutes remaining, the fifth goal arrived when after a good ball threw from Michael Georghiou found James and once again he turned provider as he fed Dean McAteer to coolly score.

Swifts manager John Watters said: “I was pleased with the result. We weren’t at our flowing best and it was hard to get our rhythm going after such a long break, but we were clinical in front of goal which is good as we have been working on that in training.”

Watters also had praise for his two new signings in central midfielder James Mays, from Sawbridgeworth Town, and right winger Kwasi Offei, from Sheering.

“Both boys did well,” he said. “James is really good on the ball and fitted in well with Dean McAteer in midfield.

“Kwasi has a lot of potential. The lad has some tricks. He hasn’t played at this level before but give him a couple of games to settle in and get used to the speed and he will do really well for us.” Swifts host Frenford Senior on Saturday (2pm kick off) at Silver Leys.

SWIFTS: Dalby, Moore, Watters, Pollard, Robins, McAteer, Mays (Dangerfield 60), James, Doku (Georghiou 70), Collins (Offei 65), Cockman. Subs not used Denney, Sanga-ismael.
