UTTLESFORD residents have two chances to be part of the 2014 Tour de France when the cycling spectacular visits the district this summer.

There is an opportunity to volunteer as a Tour Maker on Monday, July 7, when the third stage of the epic race makes its way through Essex before heading to London to finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

Tour Makers will be in the front line to welcome the world and help millions of spectators.

Residents have until Monday (January 20) to register their interest in being a Tour Maker by visiting http://letour.yorkshire.com/tour-makers.vThose who register will be contacted when details of volunteering opportunities become available.

The route enters Essex north of Saffron Walden, taking in parts of Uttlesford, Braintree, Chelmsford and Epping Forest, leaving the county through Epping en route to London.

Cllr Howard Rolfe, Uttlesford District Council’s cabinet member for communities and partnerships, said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming Le Tour to Uttlesford in 2014, building on the legacy of hosting the Torch Relay for London 2012.

“These high-profile events are made even more special by the help and dedication given by hard-working volunteers, so if you would like to get involved and become a Tour Maker, I urge residents to sign up before Monday’s deadline.”

On the eve of the tour coming to Uttlesford, Walden Velo and Saffron Walden Round Table are inviting amateur cyclists to take part in the "Carnival Tour Sportive" on Sunday, July 6.

The 50-mile (80k) event will start and finish on Saffron Walden Common and offers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride part of the following day’s stage 3.

It is one of a host of events that will take place on the Sunday of Walden’s carnival weekend to raise money for local charities.

Entry is restricted to 1,000 cylists and a third of the places have already been snapped up. For more details see https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/101872/Carnival.
