A TIMELY and unexpectedly topical opera written more than a century ago is coming to Bishop’s Stortford.
Franz Lehar’s 1905 spectacular The Merry Widow, in which a crisis-riddled European nation is struggling to keep bankruptcy at bay, will be performed at Rhodes next Friday (Feb 24).
The show, brought to town by acclaimed touring company Opera della Luna and with a libretto translated into English by Jeremy Sams, follows the exploits of a recently-bereaved young widow amid the decadent Paris nightclubs of the 1900s.
Formerly the wealthiest woman in the fictional country of Pontevedro, the prospect of her finding a French husband would spell financial ruin for her homeland – but can her compatriots tempt her away from her new social whirl?
Opera della Luna’s previous tour won plaudits across the regional press. Their latest show will be accompanied by a live orchestra.
Doors open at 7.30pm and tickets are £19 (£17 concs). See www.rhodesbishopsstortford.org.uk or ring (01279) 651746.
