The picture, Double Blue, was taken in Bishop’s Stortford using a Samsung digital camera while 27-year-old Kate, right, who lives in Newtown Road, was out for a walk with her mum Irene Kukawska.

“It is the first time I have entered the competition and I can’t believe I’ve won,” said Kate, who is originally from Poland and was encouraged by fiance Dan. “It was my New Year resolution to take part and I’m so pleased.” Double Blue was one of three pictures she entered for January, which had the theme “Blue”.

“Well done, Kate,” said our judges, professional photographers Stephen Thomas and Adriana Potts, of Elsenham-based Catchlight Art Photography.

“The image shows imagination indeed. It looks like it’s been shot through blue glass, which has picked up the figure behind in a mysterious way. The composition is spot-on and the person’s profile suggests a thoughtful mood.”

Special commendations go to Blue Blood by December winner Monica Vermuelen, and Hatfield Forest by Bill Stokoe. “We love the stunning sky,” commented the judges. “The reflection on the water is strong enough that the image could be turned upside down and still look the same.” Finally, they praised Jacob by Nick Martin. “This image shows skill in composition and selected editing,” said Stephen and Adriana.
