NOWADAYS our shrinking industrial output tends to be out of town. A hundred years ago things were very different with Bishop’s Stortford for example boasting flour mills, match factories and hat manufacturers, all within walking distance of the town centre.
The obvious example in Stortford is of course the flour mill on Station Road. It could be seen as a blot on the landscape but it’s firmly placed as part of our manufacturing history and sits in stark contrast to its surroundings. All our local towns and villages still show evidence of this past and we’d really like to see what you can find.
It may just be some old fuel pumps and a tiny shed where the attendant spent their time in-between ‘fill ups’. You may know of somewhere that’s been in production for generations like an old engineering workshop. Remember that it has to be either in town or village.
Try and record your findings by either isolating your subject to make it appear from a past time i.e. maybe convert your image to black and white or even sepia or show the building in contrast to its newer, more modern surroundings.
Just remember to take your time and observe first all the possible angles, focal lengths and of course the light before turning on your camera and hopefully taking the winning shot!
