THE theme for May is 'Landmarks' while the Rotary Young Photographer theme is 'My Favourite View'.
Landmarks (pictures will appear in a slideshow above)
At some time we’ve all been asked to give someone directions and you’ve probably included some point of interest which stands out well enough to ensure the final destination is found.
Using some of the tips from past competitions, create an image that you’d be proud to hang on your wall. Consider light, time of day, composition (think of how the background, if any will compliment the subject).
Remember that the distance between your camera and the subject will make a difference to how much is in focus. Go in close for shallow focus or stand back for more.
Use a wide angle to throw the background further away or stand back and zoom in to bring the background forwards which compresses the image planes.
If this sounds too much just try the experiments yourself, noting down what you’ve done so you can compare your results later once they’ve been downloaded.
The winner will be selected by Catchlight Photography. If you’d like to learn more about photography with their ‘One to One Personal Workshops’ visit http://www.catchlighphotographers.co.uk/ and go to ‘Photography Workshops’.
The winner will be announced in the Observer.
Send your entries to richard.stainton@hertsessexnews.co.uk Please put 'Landmarks' in the subject line of the email and make sure your email contains your name, age, address, daytime telephone number and details of where and when the photo was taken.
ALL ENTRIES MUST HAVE BEEN TAKEN WITHIN THE HERTS & ESSEX OBSERVER CIRCULATION AREA (East Herts and Uttlesford) BY SOMEONE RESIDENT IN THAT AREA WITHIN THE CALENDAR MONTH OF THE COMPETITION. NO MORE THAN FIVE PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE PUBLISHED FROM ANY ONE PERSON PER MONTH
My Favourite View (pictures will appear in a slideshow below)
This could be an attractive street scene or a countryside scene, possibly with a town or village from a distance. It could be a street market, in other words a view doesn't necessarily mean a view of a landscape. Let your imagination run wild if you like.
The Rotary Young Photographer Competition is sponsored by the Bishop’s Stortford Rotary Club in partnership with the Observer and Catchlight Art Photography. There are two age categories: Under-12s and 12-18 years old.
The Rotary Young Photographer will run until the end of May 2011.
Gil Cox, former owner of Cox Photography and Rotary member, together with Stephen Thomas and Adriana Potts of Catchlight Art Photography, will judge the youngsters’ entries.
Monthly winners will receive a certificate and an unframed print of their entry. The two overall winners will receive a £50 Photosound voucher and a framed print of their winning entry.
