Spotlight on youngsters at theatre workshop

ALMOST 30 youngsters got a taste of life in the limelight when they took part in Rhodes’ first ever Play In A Day workshop.

The venture, launched by the Bishop’s Stortford centre’s creative director Phil Dale, gave 28 primary school pupils just a few hours to prepare a show and perform it in front of their parents.

With the help of qualified drama tutors from Phoenix Theatre School, which Phil also runs, the children put on a Valentines Day-themed production called Stupid Cupid.

Running at just over half an hour long, it used a song, poetry and mime to tell the story of a miserable pop star who finds the meaning of love.

Photographs were taken throughout the day and every student who took part will have a chance to buy a DVD of the final show.

Phil said: “The children had great fun, but most importantly worked hard to achieve their goal and astounded their friends and family. They received a rousing ovation at the end and went home tired but thrilled, with new friends and a huge sense of achievement.”

Phoenix will be holding further events at Rhodes, including its popular Blast! summer course for older children, later this year. It also plans to repeat Play In A Day following the pilot event’s success.
